A dialysis technician is an allied health professional who operates and maintains dialysis equipment for patients with kidney diseases. This dialysis equipment is designed to remove the waste and excess fluids that the patient may not be able to relieve, due to kidney failure.

Dialysis technicians are commonly referred to as renal dialysis technicians, hemodialysis technicians, or nephrology technicians. The work of these technicians is supervised by physicians, at various hospitals and clinics around the globe.

In order to be successful as a dialysis technician you must have full understanding of the dialysis machine. You are in charge of the operation, maintenance, and sterilization of the machines.

Dialysis technicians also have a large amount of responsibility when it comes to the patients’ needs. Their additional jobs include carefully and regularly monitoring the weight of the patient, checking all vital signs before, during, and after blood cleansing procedures to insure that everything is 100% ok, and instructing patients that are capable of home treatment, of the actions they should take to heal themselves properly.

Strict safety precautions are enforced, due to the nature of this work. Utmost care is taken when dealing with blood to avoid illnesses, such as Aids, and hepatitis.

With that said those that find themselves afraid of the sight of blood or the idea of dealing with blood in any way, shape, or form, should definitely not make this a career choice.

A dialysis technician has become much more essential, than in the past with kidney failure and other kidney related diseases on the rise in the past decade.

With the requirement of a certificate you receive through training, many have found a dialysis technician job to be just the job they need that provides the pay level that they desire.

It also creates a nice job avenue for those currently in high school or college or those who are in between looking for a high paying job that does not require a four year degree and mountains of debt.

This job is ideal for people who enjoy helping others, and those who prefer a more hands on approach towards health in general.
